Welcome to the story of Holly Grove Church, a place with a rich history that began on October 24, 1890. It was on this day that the land where the church now stands was purchased, with the dream of building a beautiful church. The construction of Holly Grove Church commenced on October 22, 1892, on a certain tract of land in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
The property was noteworthy for the numerous holly trees that surrounded it, often serving as markers. Legend has it that the church officers were so enchanted by these beautiful holly trees that they decided to name the church "Holly Grove" in their honor.
Throughout the years, the church continued to grow and evolve. On May 19, 1945, the trustees of Holly Grove acquired the old "Holly Grove School House" at a public auction, located at the intersection of roads 600 and 637 in Isle of Wight County. This acquisition added to the church's historical significance.
In April 8, 1955, the cemetery received a generous donation from one of our members, Bro. Sherman W. Weaver. His contribution allowed for the expansion of the cemetery, creating a lasting place of rest for our loved ones.
Another act of kindness came on June 23, 1989, when a community friend, Bro. William A. Gwaltney, donated a tract of land to expand the church grounds. This gesture brought the community and the church even closer together.
Over the years, the physical structure of Holly Grove Church has seen significant changes. Originally a wooden building consisting of a sanctuary and combined choir stand, it now boasts a vestibule, dining area, kitchen, pastor's study, and bathrooms. In 1984, the exterior was beautifully bricked, adding to the church's charm.
Renovation work and the construction of a new addition took place in January 2001, as the dedicated members saved for years to make it possible. The church steeple's pointer has a special history as it was cut from an existing holly tree on the church grounds in 1893, connecting it deeply to its roots.
Holly Grove Church has been blessed with thirty-two dedicated shepherds, or pastors, who have led the congregation over the span of more than a century. Each of them has played a vital role in the spiritual and physical growth of the church, contributing to its enduring legacy.
The church is forever grateful for its steadfast members who have come before us, laying the strong foundation upon which we continue to build. We honor their memory as we move forward, cherishing the past and embracing the future.
